COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills

Are you ready to take your first step to becoming a qualified counsellor?  Or maybe you wish to embed counselling skills into your current role?  Alternatively you might just want to understand yourself and your relationships a little better?

This course will give you new listening and communication techniques and insights into yourself and others. You are encouraged to explore your own beliefs, ethics, and values throughout the 4 modules and consider the impact these have on you and others. As you learn how counselling skills can be effectively used, you will have the opportunity to develop your own skills in triad practice throughout every module.

The COSCA certificate in counselling skills is widely recognised by employers, counselling agencies and training providers/universities and is the entry requirement for our own Diploma in Pluralistic Counselling and Psychotherapy.

This training can also be adapted and delivered directly to organisations. Tailored to the needs of staff working in diverse settings, such as drugs and alcohol or older people. This course can provide a solid grounding in communication skills and the practice of establishing effective relationships.

Counselling skills include the ability to listen attentively, understand, and reflect back what others are saying without interrupting or rushing to respond. This involves paying attention not only to the words but also to the emotions and body language.

Developing empathy and positive regard for others allows others to feel understood, which helps to build rapport and trust.

Reflecting feelings and thoughts helps to clarify emotions and experiences, fostering deeper self-awareness.

There is also an opportunity to improve boundary setting and holding and increase understanding on what is meant by ethical and safe support.

Many applicants wish to take their first step to becoming a counsellor.  Others which to gain knowledge and skill to embed these skills in their current practice in a helping role.

Those who wish to gain insight and understanding for their own personal development also apply.

This provides an opportunity for a rich and diverse learning experience.

We receive applications from those in nursing, teaching and social work.  We also receive applications from volunteers and staff from the third sector, students leaving university, those who wish to change career.

We feel that the COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills is a well structured and engaging course which offers so many personal and professional benefits.

Feedback is often a balance between… ‘I’ve learned so much about myself and I’ve learned so much about how to help others!’
